May 19 (Bloomberg) -- The offices of the insolvent German company that makes the mascot for the World Cup soccer tournament were raided by the police yesterday, according to the Public Prosecutor's office in Hof, Germany.
Police raided six sites in southern Germany and seized evidence, the prosecutor's office said today in an e-mailed statement. The office is now also investigating Ottmar Pfaff, former Chief Executive Officer of Nici AG, maker of soft toys such as the ``Goleo'' lion mascot, on suspicion of fraud, according to the statement.
Auditing company Roedl & Partner discovered that Nici sold fake bills to factoring companies, which make money by buying bills for less than face value, Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported today, without saying where it got the information. The bills charged non-existent clients for products Nici never made, creating a hole of several tens of millions of euros in Nici's2005 balance sheet, the newspaper said.
The auditors took the bills to the company's supervisoryboard, which then removed Pfaff from office, Sueddeutsche Zeitung said. Matthias Struwe, a spokesman for Roedl & Partner in Nuremberg, Germany, told Bloomberg News he can't comment onthe matter because of a confidentiality agreement with Nici AG.
Uwe Klimach, head of marketing at Nici, declined to commenton the report. Pfaff's telephone number could not be found in atelephone book, and Samia Seltmann, spokeswoman for Nici, refusedto disclose contact information for the former executive.
